How Does it Work?

You’ve got this.  Once you’ve lined up a speaker, subject and a date, invite as many friends as you’d like to join the SmallTalk.  We have found that up to 20 guests is a good number to encourage participation.  Advise your friends of any pre-reading suggested by the speaker.  Decide whether to ask your invitees to share the cost of the speaker and/or refreshments.

We encourage you to use the SmallTalk to meet new people, so invite your guests to bring a friend if you have the space!

Before the speaker arrives, arrange your furniture to provide adequate seating for everyone, including the speaker, if necessary.  The speaker will address their subject for approximately 45 minutes, more or less, after which the floor will be open for questions, comments and conversation.  At this point, take a break to allow your guests to refill their glasses or visit the washroom.  (Since the group is small, it’s less distracting to your speaker if food is not served until after the formal lecture part of the event.)  Consider rearranging your seating so that the post-lecture focus is on your guests, not the speaker — this will encourage participation.  The speaker will be yours for up to 90 minutes unless you’ve agreed otherwise in advance.
